Scripps Networks
My most recent internship is one with Scripps Networks in Knoxville. Scripps Networks is the “Leader in Lifestyle Media” and operates popular channels such as HGTV, Food Network, Do-it-Yourself Network, Fine Living Network, and Great American Country. At Scripps, I am working with the producers of the programming seen on these channels. One of the most interesting projects I’ve worked on was the post-production of an HGTV show called “Change the World: American Heroes” which aired on Nov. 11, 2009 (Veterans’ Day). The show remodeled veterans homes with the help of notable figures including NFL players. In addition, I’ve served as a production assistant for a live local television broadcast telethon called “Live United” to raise money for the United Way. I also designed promotional print materials for clients of Scripps Networks and worked on the development of an internal image management system.
Tennessee Athletics Broadcasting
I began my senior year with a challenge in time management. I had committed to serving as Editor-in-Chief at TNJN.com and as a production intern at Scripps Networks, but I wasn’t getting as much “hands-on” experience as I wanted. About the same time, I was recommended to work with Tennessee Athletics Broadcasting (TAB) by UT’s Women’s Athletic Director, Joan Cronin. I saw the recommendation as an opportunity I couldn’t pass up (UT Athletics Broadcasting is one of, if not the best collegiate sports broadcasting programs in the country). Since I joined the team, I’ve done many things, including:
-
•Filmed and edited high-end Tennessee football highlight movies
-
•Streamed live video of soccer and volleyball matches online
-
•Shot, edited, and produced multiple interviews of UT athletes
-
•Designed graphics for display in Neyland Stadium
-
•Managed multiple (ESPN, raw, video board) video recordings for football games
Working with TAB has really been an excellent experience and given me access to many people, places and equipment I wouldn’t otherwise be able.
NewsChannel5 Network
In the summer of 2009, I worked with the NewsChannel5 Network (CBS affiliate-Nashville) as a production intern. During my time with NC5, I was able to learn from and shadow producers and directors from the #1 CBS affiliate in the top 30 markets (May 2009 Sweeps). I also had many opportunities to be the technical director and assistant director on more than 10 shows on the cable channel. I regularly managed the studio floor for tapings and broadcasts (operating cameras, setting up microphones, and coordinating guests and talent, etc.). While with NC5, I made my way around to many departments trying to gain as much variety in my experience as possible. I couldn’t have had a better experience with a local television station.
Tennessee Smokies Baseball Club
I joined the Tennessee Smokies Baseball Club as a video production and graphic design intern for their 2008 season. The Smokies are the AA Affiliate of the Chicago Cubs and are located in Kodak, Tennessee. Here I had an opportunity to work with professional recording, editing and switching equipment in a live sports environment. My fellow interns and I started from scratch--creating all the graphics, videos, and promotional materials and coordinating in-game entertainment. The Smokies production interns put on the best overall show in the Southern League in 2008.
WUTK 90.3 FM “The Rock”
My first communications experience at UT came at the university radio station, 90.3 FM “The Rock” (WUTK) in the Spring of 2007. Here I was a volunteer disc jockey, and became familiar with the operations of a radio station. WUTK was voted “Knoxville’s Best Radio Station” by the readers of MetroPulse magazine while I was on the staff. It was great to be broadcasting and developing my on-air vocal talent through this opportunity. I was told that I had good “natural ability” for vocal performance and deejaying. From taking listener calls and requests to promotional giveaways to simply talking over the airwaves, this was a truly fun experience for me.
Background
I have always had my sights set on visual communications since I was a kid. I can remember working on a presentation for my sixth grade class, and for the majority of the project, I took a desktop publishing program (Serif Page Plus 3.0 for Windows, if you are familiar) and created a visually appealing document that could have passed for a magazine feature. Since then, I have been designing and creating many of my ideas, and I have always had side projects to those I am assigned in class. Visual Communications is my calling, and I am enthusiastic about following that path.
MUSIC
I have been a musician since I was seven years old, so I have had a special appreciation for the art form. At one time I played the piano, and I would like to learn how again. I have played classical trumpet since I was 10, jazz trumpet since I was 13, and I began playing the flugelhorn at age 16. During this period of time I have also been a member of the Blackman High School marching band and the University of Tennessee’s Pride of the Southland Marching Band.
As a member of four of UT’s instrumental ensembles, I have had the opportunity to travel the country. Twenty-three trips, 14 states, two national championships, and one presidential inauguration parade later, I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience with this prestigious organization.
In addition, I have been a contributor to Knoxville’s local music scene as the brass specialist in a variety performance band. The band has since broken up and each of us have gone our separate ways, but the experience of performing live shows in Market Square is a memory I will always keep.
